Apparatus for coating the surface of an item with a liquid material comprises conveyer means for supporting and carrying the item to be coated in a given path, pouring means disposed above the path of said conveyer means for delivering a curtain of liquid material through which the item will pass, movable means briefly to interrupt the curtain of liquid material, said means being positioned between the conveyer means and the coating means, and actuating means connected to reciprocate said movable means through said curtain of liquid in timed relation to said conveyer means. As shown, a conveyer frame 30, to which the object 26 to be coated is attached, is passed below a liquid container having a sloped bottom having an orifice opening 16, from which a continuous curtain of liquid falls into the pan 20 below the conveyer (from which it is recirculated to the container). Interrupting means comprises a piece of piano wire 42 stretched between members 44, 46 reciprocable by pneumatic cylinders 62, 64 which are actuated according to the position of frame 30 (e.g. by a cam on the drive means) to move wire 42 through the falling curtain and interrupt it momentarily, at the moment when the leading edge of a carrier 30 is approaching the curtain.
