摘要 <p>PURPOSE: To use the most efficient packet address type by making an individual packet include an address part, encoded by one of plural encoding formats and one character identifying the type of the address encoding format. CONSTITUTION: A packet length variable 123 has 7-bit length and precedes a one-bit address type character 271 which identifies whether a physical address 122 is a bit map address or a binary coded point-to-point address. The physical address is presented, in response to the virtual channel identifier of an incoming packet by a translation table 113, and individual physical addresses are stored in the translation table 113 by a network controller 115, in response to requests for connections which identify virtual channels to be used. The network controller 115 determines the types of packets to be sent in virtual channels, in response to individual requests for connections. For example, it determines whether mutli-address communication packets or point-to-point packets should by sent in virtual channels in accordance with the requests.</p>
