A zinc based powder for alkaline batteries is claimed contg. less mercury. It contains, in addn. to zinc and its inevitable impurities; Al 0.005 to 2%; Rare earth metal (REM) 0.0001 to 0.01%; In or REM 0.0001 to 2%; Bi 0.003-2% + In or REM 0.0001 to 2%; Pb 0.005 to 2% + In or REM 0.0001 to 2%; Pb 0.005 to 2%, Bi 0.003 to 2% and In or REM 0.0001 to 2%. The pref. amt. of Al is 0.02 to 0.06%, of In is 0.0025 to 0.05% and of rare earth metals is 0.0003 to 0.005%. The powder can contain up to 0.2% Hg but this can range down to zero. The lead level can be as high as 2% but the min. claimed is 0.01 to 1%. The pref. Bi level is 0.003 to 0.05%. In addn. there is pref. 0.005 to 0.07% of at least one element from the group Ga, Rn, alkali metals and alkali earth metal. |
