Method for the production of a polypeptide which is advantageous in a diagnostic method and system to test for the presence of anti-EBNA antibodies in a bodily sample. Antigens, immunogens, innoculums and particularly diagnostic methods and systems are described relating to the nuclear antigen of the Barr-Epstein virus, together with the method for the production of the polypeptide which is used in said systems and which consists of a random synthetic copolymer containing from 6 to 40 aminoacid residues, approximately, with a sequence corresponding to the sequence of a CMV-encoded polypeptide antigen. The diagnostic methods and systems are particularly useful in the identification of mononucleosis infection during its acute phase.
