An anti-collision detection and warning system comprising a plurality of detectors (2) mounted on a vehicle (5) which receive light pulses emitted by a transmitter (1) located on a vehicle (4) whose location is to be communicated to an operator of the vehicle (5) by means of a receiver (3) mounted, for example, in the operator's cabin. The detectors (2) include a shield (18) having a window (17) shaped so that the detector (2) receives light only from within a predefined zone. In a particular form the zone is divided into an inner zone and an outer zone, the inner zone being closed to the vehicle (5). This arrangement allows an operator of the vehicle (5) to detect the presence of the vehicle (4) before a collision occurs. |
