An elevated passenger car (10) has an emergency exit feature (18). The passenger car (10) is of the type supported such that there are substantially no obstructions between the underside of the car and the ground below it. The car (10) includes a body (12) having a passenger compartment (14) and an opening (18) through the body (12) generally at one end thereof defining an exit from the passenger compartment (14) to outside the body (12). An end section (22) is pivotally mounted on the body (12) at the one end. Fluid pressure actuated cylinders (28) swing the end section (22) between a closed position in which the end section (22) closes the exit (18) and an open position in which said exit is opened to the outside. An elevator (48, 50) supported by the end section (22) in its open position lowers passengers from the elevated passenger car (10). |
