The machine for tearing up flax comprises, from the front to the rear, a tearing-up assembly (7) and a spreading-out assembly (8), which are mounted on a single framework (6) which can pivot with respect to the running chassis (2) about a horizontal and transverse axis of rotation (5) located towards the rear of the machine. The space (30) lying between the output belts (13, 14) of the tearing-up assembly (7) and the input rollers (17, 18) of the spreading-out assembly has constant and small dimensions regardless of the position of rest or working position of the tearing-up machine. <IMAGE>
