PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound free from generation of crystalline precipitates even after a long-term storage by treating the produced methacrylate with acid clay in producing the subject compound by an ester interchange reaction between methyl methacrylate and an alcohol in the presence of lithium hydroxide as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:When producing a methacrylate by an ester interchange reaction between methyl methacrylate and a corresponding alcohol in the presence of lithium hydroxide as a catalyst, the above-mentioned methacrylate is treated with acid clay, especially an active clay preferably in an amount of 0.1-5.0wt.% based on the methacrylate for adsorption and removal of a lithium methacrylate contained in the objective compound, thus providing the objective compound free from generation of crystalline precipitates even after a long-term storage. In addition, after the above-mentioned reaction, (a) unreacted raw materials are removed under heating under reduced pressure and (b) the catalyst is removed by filtration (Either may be carried out in advance of the other). The treatment with acid clay is preferably carried out after the procedure (b). |
