The prevention of ammonia carry-over to a dry chemistry test element that is ammonia-sensitive. The improvement is based upon the discovery that previous ammonia carry-over was created by the leakage of ammonia from one ammonia-sensitive element to another test element, and that each element has a construction of a mount that provided a gas leakage path into the viewing aperture of the base sheet (122) mount. Thus, the method features a) forming the area (A) of the surface (132) of said base sheet (122) in contact with a chemistry unit (110) so as to be essentially smooth, and b) applying an adhesive (160) over said area so as to block off any leakage of gas through said aperture (128) and said area (A) between said chemistry unit (110) and said base sheet (122).
