The invention concerns a method of flushing out an empty rainwater storage tank (1). The floor (2) of the tank slopes downwards to a sump (3) with the floor of the sump (3) being below the lowest part of the floor of the tank. A vessel (5) for the flushing water is mounted near the upper edge of the tank at the end opposite to the sump (3). This vessel (5) is mounted so that it can be tipped about the horizontal axis (7). When the water level in the tank falls to the level (27) a switch is actuated and sets a pump (4) in operation to fill the vessel (5) with water fron the tank. When the water falls to the level (22) a second switch is actuated. This switch activates a mechanism (20) which retracts the bolt supporting the vessel (5) so that it tips about the axis (7) and discharges the contents into the tank (1).
