Combustion fumes from boiler plant, esp oil-fired domestic central heaters, are fed to a washing chamber (6) where a fine alkaline spray is produced from material in a storage vessel directed on to the rotating blades of a bladed wheel (28) inside a cage. Used spray is collected and regenerated in an adjacent unit (10) by metered addn. of quick-e, under the control of a meter and sepn. from the resultant slurry. Before entering the washing chamber, hot fumes pass through a heat exchanger (4) to transfer part of their heat to fumes which have been cleaned (and cooled) in the later stages, and thus ensure adequate lift for treated fumes leaving the smoke-stack (9). ADVANTAGE - Simple and compact installation is suitable for smaller buildings, without needing extensive modification of structure in boiler room or adjacent cellar.
