Short-circuit current limiter - with capacitor parallel to superconductor and rapid switch in tandem

Short-circuit current limiter for a load circuit having superconductor has parallel to the latter a capacitor and in series with them a switch which interrupts the current when the superconductor passes from the superconducting to the normally conducting state. Pref. an a.c. generator (1) supplies current to a consumer (4). The reactance (2) determines the size of current which can flow when a short-circuit occurs at the point. The limiter (3) comprises superconductor and parallel to it a capacitor. The switch interrupts the circuit in case of a short-circuit when the superconductor passes from the superconducting to the normally conducting state. ADVANTAGE - Limiter can be used for high temp. superconductors. The switch interrupts any short-circuit current before the superconductor is destroyed.
