A window or door can be opened either by swinging it about hinges with vertical axes or by tilting it about its lower edge. The window or door is held in its open position by a scissors type linkage. The linkage includes a lever (1) which can pivot and slide relative to the edge of the window or door to which it is attached by means of a bolt which engages a slotted hole. The lever (1) has a number of trapezoidal projections (2,2') which can engage the side faces trapezoidal projections on the strip of metal attached to the edge of the window or door, and thus hold the window or door in the open position.
