Chenodeoxycholic acid can be prepared with practically quantitative yields by reduction of 3 alpha ,7 alpha -dihydroxy-12-oxo-5ss-cholanic acid with hydrazine and an inorganic base, the procedure being carried out in an aqueous-organic solvent and then removing the water by distillation.
