Compounds of the general formula: (I) wherein Z is an oxygen or sulphur atom or an group, R1, R2 and R3, which can be the same or different, are hydrogen atoms or alkyl, aralkyl or aromatic radicals and R4 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical and in which one or more of the radicals R1, R2 and R3 is an aromatic radical substituted by an -O-X group in which O is an oxygen atom and X is a glycosyl, phosphate or acyl radical are substrates for the detection of substances with hydrolase activity in a variety of applications including clinical diagnosis.
