This invention relates to axial hydroxy or axial mono- or di- carboxylate platinum (IV) derivatives which possess antitumor activity, a method for therapeutically treating an animal host affected by a malignant tumor which comprises administering to said host an effective tumor-inhibiting dose of a compound according to the invention, and pharmaceutical compositions which comprise a pharmaceutically effective amount of a compound according to the invention in combination with an inert pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or diluent.
