The slide-receiving housing encloses an illumination system. A glass plate on the front side presents a rectangular illuminated surface. A shutter arrangement (10) is assigned to at least part of the illuminated surface (5). The shutter is of single or several (15,16,24) parts under the glass plate and over the illumination system of the viewer (1). The operating arrangement for the shutter (s) is coupled via a rod and mounted above the illumination system. The generating system is provided by one or more setting knobs (19). A built-in operating hours counter, a dimming switch and a light protection hood to prevent reflection from the slide (11) can be provided. The light source can be from small fluorescent tubes giving a light intensity of 5,000 lux and a light colouration of 5,000K. ADVANTAGE - Matches illuminated area to slide and light level to suit observer allowing fine detail and subtle differences to be discerned.
