In the flow drainage of washed laundry articles, the laundry articles introduced into a cylindrical vessel having a lower screen floor and an upper cover are drained by means of a medium flowing from the top downwards. To avoid various disadvantages, before the flow drainage the laundry articles are drained to a residual moisture of approximately 50-45% by mechanical pressure and only thereafter are drained to a residual moisture of approximately 40 to 30% by means of an air flow, the mechanical pressure being maintained. The process can be carried out by the use of diaphragm-type drainage presses known per se, but appropriately modified, and having an annular diaphragm tube (17) arranged on the inner wall of the cylindrical vessel (11) and inflatable hydraulically in the direction of the vessel axis. <IMAGE>
