Gaseous, volatile or dry hydrocarbons and their mixts. contg. more than 10 (10-500)ppm organohalogens are dehalogenated by passing vaporous educts through a tube (reaction volume) at 350-500 (400-500) deg.C, in which the Na-vapour pressure corresp. to the temp. can be adjusted by vaporised or vaporising Na. The residence time (T), calculated from the reaction volume and the volume stream, is approx. 10 secs. or less. USE/ADVANTAGE - Useful in dehalogenating pyrolysis gases directly after they leave the pyrolysis reactor to the required residue contents, and also in liberating gases inert to Na (predominantly N2- or Co2-contg. gases and noble gases) from organohalogen cpds. and hydrogen halides. Residence time is hort and sodium loss is less than 1% of the educt.
