PURPOSE: To quickly activate an exhaust emission control device by determining the cold start condition of a vehicle by means of a temperature sensor and by shifting gear stage according to an idling operation shifting program for at least a limit time based on the determined cold start condition. CONSTITUTION: A control circuit 3 inputs the signals from a kick down generator 4, throttle valve switch 5, throttle valve opening degree sensor 6, engine speed sensor 7 and transmission output speed sensor 8 to control the automatic speed change of an automatic transmission 2. When the cold start condition of a vehicle is detected by the signal from a temperature sensor 16, the gear stage of the automatic transmission 2 is shifted according to the detected condition for at least a limited time, generating exhaust emission substances or energy flow higher than those in the gear stage according to load optimizing shifting program. The temperature of an exhaust emission control device can thus quickly by made to be near an activation temperature. |
