Benzyl ketones of the general formula I <IMAGE> (I) where R1 is C1-C8-alkyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by cycloalkyl or aryl and R2 and R3 are each halogen, C1-C4-alkyl, hydroxyl, C1-C4-alkoxy or C2-C4-methylenedioxy, are prepared by a process in which a glycol monoether of the general formula II <IMAGE> (II) where R1, R2 and R3 have the abovementioned meanings and R4 is C1-C8-alkyl, is converted in the presence of silica, a phosphate or a zeolite at from 50 DEG to 500 DEG C. and under from 0.01 to 50 bar.
