[Also in Divisions B4 and F2] A machine for piercing a workpiece by a selftapping screw, and then screwing the screw into the workpiece, comprises a screwdriver bit 71, Fig. 1 (not shown), rotatable by an air motor 15, and a rod 22 movable axially to impact the bit by an air cylinder 25 controlled by a valve 36. A bevel gear 17 driven by motor 15 meshes with a bevel gear 47 formed on a sleeve 48 through which impact rod 22 passes. Sleeve 48 is rotatably supported in bearings 50, 51 and has a collar 52 screwed thereon, which carries a clutch housing 53. Dog teeth on collar 52 co-operate with dog teeth on a plate 54, to form a dog clutch 55, and plate 54 is mounted on a shaft 56 and co-operates with a second plate 58 to form a slipping clutch. Plate 58 is drivingly connected to shaft 56 by balls 59, and is urged into engagement with plate 54 by a spring 62. Bit 71 has a hexagonal portion 67 which fits into a corresponding bore in shaft 56, and is releasably held therein by spring-urged balls 69. The dogs of clutch 55 are normally held in their disengaged position by exhaust air from motor 15, which passes into a space 77. In operation, valve 36 is actuated to move impact rod 22 axially, so that shaft 56 is impacted to pierce the workpiece by the screw, motor 15 is started and the screw is driven into the workpiece. In a modification, air motor 106, Fig. 4 (not shown), drives bit 119 by gears 128, 127, 126, and dogs 122 are held in the disengaged position by a spring 129. In a further modification, sleeve 48, Fig. 1A (not shown), has a collar 200 fixed therein, and carries a sleeve 201. Shaft 66 carries plates 203, 204, forming the slipping clutch, the plate 203 being keyed to the shaft, and the plate 204, being keyed to sleeve 201 by a set of balls 205. The torque is transmitted from sleeve 201, to shaft 56 via the overload slipping clutch 203, 204. Screwdriver bit.-The screwdriver bit 71, Fig. 1 (not shown), has an end whose shape corresponds with a recess in the screw, which recess is formed by a central cavity, and four driver wing engaging grooves radiating outwardly, and intermediate each two grooves is formed a valley of V-form which slopes downwardly and inwardly with respect to the screw axis; and wherein the side walls of the recess grooves are substantially vertical. |
