PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compounds for synthesis of hydroquinone useful in photograph industry with a high selectivity without a problem of corrosion of metallic materials by reacting phenol with oxygen in the presence of a specified catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Using copper oxide and aluminum oxide as the catalyst, phenol or a substituted phenol is reacted with oxygen at 0-150 deg.C, preferably at 10-100 deg.C to obtain the objective compound. As the above-mentioned catalyst, a material containing cuprous oxide or cupric oxide and aluminum oxide is used and the catalyst may contain hydrated or adsorbed water. The atomic ratio of aluminum to copper is 0.01-100g atom aluminum based on 1g atom copper. Production thereof is carried out by kneading the raw material compounds using water as a binder and drying the kneaded materials. In addition, not only pure oxygen but air or a nitrogen-diluted oxygen can be used as the oxygen source. |
