High priority units (1) are coupled to a disc controller (2) and disc drive units (8). The controller has a channel control stage (3) with a data buffer (4), microprocessor (5) and control memory (6), coupled to an interface control (7). Each disc drive has read/write units (15) and a servo circuit (14) coupled to the drive unit (9). A micro-processor (1), buffer memory (17) and data discriminator (16) complete the system. The system operates in an on-line mode with highest priority units (1) being given access in sequence. Data buffer memories (17) provided storage while in a waist loop. ADVANTAGE - Minimises delay in on-line data storage and access.
