Strain relief apparatus for relieving strain on a cable (28) of an electrical device having a housing (16) with a notched-out portion (17) therein includes a strain relief member (30) which is generally planar and is mounted directly into the notched-out portion (17). The strain relief member (30) has a straight channel (66) which has a U-shaped cross-section and which is dimensioned to provide an interference fit with the cable (28) after the cable (28) is mounted therein and which coacts with a wall (33) of the notched-out portion (17) to assist in retaining the cable (28) in the channel (56).
