Material for coating cable connectors etc. - with heat-shrinkable layer of thermoplastic to give stress-free coating

Material for producing sleeving, casings, covers, tubes, etc. on articles such as cable connections or branches has a stress-free coating of thermoplastic material. The prod. pref. has a fabric of polyester, rayon or fine glass filaments, and its film is pref. self-lubricating by e.g. a graphite, molybdenum cpd. talc, etc. filler. The stress-free coating can be e.g. polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide etc. and it provides physical protection from e.g. nicks, cuts, scratches, etc. It also absorbs heat when the film is raised to high temps. e.g. by a flame and it distributes the heat more uniformly over the shrinkable film. To minimise any risk of cracking it is also advantageous to lightly cross-link the coating, so that it still remains soft but lies tightly against the article to be protected. The main film can also be adhesive-coated. ADVANTAGE - The prods. are efficient and stable and consequently avoid the problem of cracking which can arise hitherto when heating and shrinking the materials concerned. They are simple and inexpensive to make.
