The paper guide device for a buckle folding machine has at least two pairs of fold rollers and two fold plates as well as paper stops and a rail like paper deflector. The paper deflector (11) is swivelled by means of mechanical switch members (25,26) operated by the paper stop or the setting members thereof from its rest position which holds the fold plates (1) open into its locking position which closes the fold plate (1) in that the paper stop is brought into a position lying outside of the maximum sheet inlet depth. The paper deflector can have on one side a convex guide face (13) which in its rest position directs the incoming material into the fold plate. (1), and on the other side a concave face (12) which in its blocking position passes the material past the fold plate. USE/ADVANTAGE - The paper deflector operates without special electromagnetic drives.
