The packaging machine has a rhythmically driven pin wheel with slit-like sockets and support walls spread out over the circumference to take the boxes made from cardboard blanks. On the support wall (14) lying in the area of the side wall (13) of the box (6) set at the back in the rotating direction of the pin wheel (1) there is a retaining device (16,17) for the side wall (13) of the box. This retaining device can be a suction unit with a suction chamber (16) associated with each socket (3) and connected by a pipe system to an underpressure source. USE/ADVANTAGE - During the closing process the box is prevented from being squashed into a rhombus whereby a satisfactory closure can be achieved.
