In a ball joint of the type described in Specification 1,142,791, wherein a ball head of a ball pin is movably supported in an elastic casing which is snap-fitted into a rigid casing ring for reinforcement of the casing walls so that they retain the ball head, the casing is modified by lubricating recesses formed in its bearing surface. A joint pin 1 with a ball head 2 in a hollow casing 3 of elastic plastics material such as polyurethane, emerges through a pin aperture 6, the ball being retained by reinforcement of the casing walls by a snap fitting, rigid metal casing ring 4, seated in an annular groove 7. The closed end 8 of the casing is thickened, and has a lubricant chamber 9 and grooves 10 extending therefrom, the chamber and grooves being open to the bearing surface of the ball head. The casing ring is provided with a lubrication nipple 13 communicating with the grooves through a tube. Surrounding the ball, at its equator, are one or more inserts 11 comprising rings of a rigid plastics material having good sliding properties; they are suitably incorporated into the casing during its manufacture, being positioned in the mould prior to injection of the casing material. Angular movement of the joint pin may be restricted by a spigot 14 projecting into the chamber 9. The casing ring may be formed on a supporting member (not shown) to provide a mount for the joint; when angular movement of the pin is greater in one direction than in others, necessitating a pin aperture elongated in that direction, the casing may be prevented from rotating within the casing ring, (and hence relative to the mount), by a rib 15 in the ring which engages in slot in the casing wall. A sealing bellows 12 is formed integrally with the casing, and is preferably more flexible than the latter; this may be achieved by use of a different plastics material, injected into the mould during manufacture, or by use of one material for both case and bellows with subsequent treatment, e.g. heat treatment, of the bellows portion to render it flexible. |
