The base of a block-bottomed bag is formed by a pair of folding members 4, 5 acting upon a tube 3 of the bag-forming material, each member comprising two symmetrically arranged hinged flaps 8, 9 having their leading edges obliquely inclined. As shown, the members engage the sides of a plastics tube 3, while disposed at an acute angle relative to each other, and then open out to become coplanar under the action of levers 10-13. Simultaneously with the inward movement of the members welding jaws 18 close on the tube to seal the top of a lower bag, and sever the tube leaving a fin seal (19), Fig. 3 (not shown), across the base of the upper bag. The jaws then release the fin (19) and move laterally across the base of the upper bag to fold the fin (19) up and seal it to the base of the bag. Downward pressure provided by the folding members 4, 5; Fig. 1, facilitates this sealing process. The jaws are then opened and the bag is filled from above and lowered between the jaws, prior to formation of the top seal of the filled bag, and the folding of the base of the next bag. As described, the flaps 8, 9 of each folding member are mounted on supports (20), Fig. 5 (not shown), carrying ball-bearings (23, 24) which run in curved guide tracks (25, 26) in a plate (27), which is fixed relative to the angular movement of the flaps (8, 9) but which moves with the folding member (4) to and from its folding position. |
