The mechanism limits the number of shots fired by a machine-pistol on pulling the trigger (6), when a weight (7) travels to and fro and is stopped after this has been done. An arrester lever (2) moves between the locking position preventing weight movement and a free one allowing firing. A toothed release wheel (1) is indexed through a set angle with each reciprocating movement of the weight. A firing wheel (26) turns with the release wheel, and successively brings the lever into the locking and free positions. It moves the lever into the latter position when the trigger is pulled.
