Hydrocarbon molecules are dehydrogenated in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst comprising a mechanical mixture of particles of less than 100a in diameter of (a) an alumina carrier having a Pt group metal deposited thereon in such an amount that the final catalyst will contain 0.05 to 5% and (b) a porous inert carrier having a R.E. metal oxide thereon in such an amount that the final catalyst contains 0.1 to 40%, the relative weight fractions of components (a) and (b) being between 0.1 and 0.9. Reference is made to reforming naphthenes, gasoline and kerosene, dehydrogenation of naphthenes, paraffins and butenes and dehydroisomerization of naphthenes, e.g. methyl cyclopentane, paraffins, indanes and tetralins. Reaction conditions and product distribution data are given.ALSO:A hydrocarbon conversion catalyst comprises a mechanical mixture of particles of less than 100 microns in diameter of (a) a carrier comprising predominantly alumina supporting a platinium group metal such that the final catalyst contains between 0.05 and 5% of a platinum group metal and (b) a porous inert carrier containing a valve earth metal oxide in such an amount that the final catalyst contains between 0.1 and 40%, the relative weight fractions of (a) and (b) being between 0.1 and 0.9. Platinum group metal is defined as Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh, Os and Ir. Rare earth metal is defined as elements 57 to 71 inclusive and Sc and Y. Specified rare earth metals are cerium, lanthanum, praseodymium neodyrum, samarium, ytterbium, gadolinium an yttrium or mixtures thereof. Component (a) may include any allotropic form of Al2O3 having e.g. a surface area of at least 10 sq.m/gm. and component (b) may have as a support silica gel, alumina, clays, bauxite, pumice stone, kaolin, charcoal, kieselguhr, porous glass, magnesia, asbestos, coke and magnesium sulphate. The carrier may contain Cl or F. Mechanical separation of components and regeneration details are given. |
