PURPOSE: To make it possible to obtain a spacer which is mechanically durable and chemically stable by providing at least one of carrier plates with glass projections of a uniform height. CONSTITUTION: At least one of the carrier plates are provided with the glass projections of the uniform height facing another carrier plate. These projections form a uniform spacing between the base surfaces of the two carrier plates and, therefore, act as substitutive for the spacers necessary for other liquid crystal switching display elements. The projections functioning as the spacers of the carrier plates are formed to 0.1μm to 0.1mm height. As a result, the excellent durability and high contrast are obtd. and since the spacers are the constituting components of the carrier surfaces, the problems relating to adhesion are eliminate and further the spacers are made chemically perfectly inert to liquid crystal.
