The invention comprises compounds of the formula: where Y is an integer, each X is H or Cl, at least two being Cl, and Z is the residue of a nitrogen base attached to the pyridine ring by way of a nitrogen atom, said nitrogen base having a basic dissociation constant of 10-7 or greater and having at least one >NH group in which each of the other valencies is attached to C, H or N; and acid addition salts thereof. The free valencies of the >NH group can be satisfied by hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, hydroxyalkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, amino, dialkylamino, guanyl, aminoalkyl, poly (aminoalkylene) amino alkyl, pyridyl, pyrimidinyl or triazyl; or they may form a ring, such as ethyleneimine, trimethyleneimine, pyrrolidine, alkylpyrrolidine, piperidine. alkylpiperidine, piperazine, alkylpiperazine or morpholine. When Y is 2 Z may be -NHNH-, -(NHCm H2m)xNH-, -NHCnH2nNH-. where m, n and x are integers. The compounds of the invention are prepared by reacting a compound: with a compound ZHy, and if desired reacting the product with an acid to produce an acid addition salt. Suitable compounds ZHy include ammonia, aliphatic, alicyclic, and heterocyclic mono- and polyamines, guanidine, hydrazine and alkyl or aralkyl hydrazines. Many such compounds are specified. Suitable starting materials are prepared by chlorinating a -picoline or partially chlorinated 2-trichloromethyl-pyridines. The compounds of the invention are pesticides and plant growth regulants (see Division A5).
