A coating composition for providing a protective-insulative coating on a metal casting belt for use in a machine for the continuous casting of metal comprises a dispersion of finely divided carbon and finely divided insulative refractory material in an aqueous or alcoholic medium containing an organic resin binder. The organic resin binder is preferably polyvinyl pyrrolidine (exemplified) or polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic acid or polyvinyl methyl ether. The finely divided insulative refractory material is preferably pumice, asbestos, talc or diatomaceous silica.ALSO:A coating composition for providing a protective-insulative coating on a metal casting belt for use in a machine for the continuous casting of metal comprises a dispersion of finely divided carbon and finely divided insulative refractory material in an aqueous or alcoholic medium containing an organic resin binder. The composition is applied to the metal belt by spraying to form a coating having a thickness in the range of 0.0005 to 0.0035 inches. The organic resin may be polyvinyl pyrrolidine, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic acid or polyvinyl methyl ether. The finely divided carbon may be acetylene block or graphite. The finely divided insulative refractory material may be pumice, asbestos, talc or diatomaceous silica.
