When processing leather and similar materials in a series of successive steps, the surface dimensions of the leather are often altered. The particular properties of leather make it necessary, therefore, to monitor such changes in surface area. In order to rationalize and to improve the quality, a process is proposed comprising a series of successive spreading and stretching steps. In this process, the area is measured before and/or after the stretching operation. An associated system comprises a transport device (7) extending along a processing line for a series of consecutive disposed leather items (L), plus a subsequent spreading station (1) with a flat surface extending beyond the edges of the leather item, plus at least one subsequently located processing station (2, 3) before or after which an area-measurement device (Ia, b, c-- IIIa, b, c) is located.
