SULFONATION OF SULFUR-CONTAINING AROMATIC RESIN

PURPOSE:To stably carry out sulfonation and to sulfonate a sulfur-containing aromatic resin safely, uniformly and at a low cost by reacting a sulfur- containing aromatic resin with a peroxide in the presence of a phosphous- containing compound and a nitrogen-containing compound. CONSTITUTION:In sulfonating a sulfide and/or a sulfoxide bond of a sulfur- containing aromatic resin (e.g. polyarylene sulfide) having a sulfide and/or a sulfoxide bond in the main chain with a peroxide (e.g. parasitic acid), the sulfonation is carried out in the presence of a phosphorus-containing compound [e.g. di-(2butenyl) 2-ethylhexyl phosphate] and/or a nitrogen-containing compound (e.g. ethylenediaminetetraammonium).
