The labelling system comprises a supply of labels on a paper strip (2) leading to a dispenser (6). Before the labels are wound into a supply coil, they are prestamped all round their periphery, with the exception of some narrow retaining webs (51-54). The webs at the front of the label are separated first, e followed by the trailing webs just before the label is removed from the rest of the strip. The label dispenser has a flat rail (21) with a dispenser edge (24) and separating tools (31, 32) for the retaining webs.
