Graft copolymers are produced by radical-initiated copolymerisation of buta-1,3-diene or isoprene with styrene, using initial styrene content S% given by S = 8.33 x 10-6C3 - 6.00 x 10-3C2 + 5.34 x 10-1C - (1.514 - n)103......(1) (in which n is refractive index of graft copolymer, C is conversion), then graft copolymerising with styrene and 1-8C alkyl (meth)acrylate or acrylonitrile. Graft copolymer has predetermined refractive index. When incorporated in PVC, it improves impact strength and processability without reducing transparency. In PVC blends for transparent containers, corrugated sheets, horticultural sheet, safety housings for engines etc.
