PURPOSE:To enable high speed pattern recognition with relatively simple constitution by providing a recognizing means which recognizes the pattern of a subject, and a processing means which performs processing other than the pattern recognition according to the output of an area image sensor except in multiple-picture-element readout mode. CONSTITUTION:The area image sensor 32 is equipped with the multiple-picture- element readout mode wherein video signals of plural picture elements are added and outputted as one signal. Then, a sensor driver circuit 33 drives the area image sensor 32 and increases the size of one picture element for the pattern recognition under the command of a sequence controller 47 to decrease the size of one picture element of an electric view finder(EVF) 46 or at the time of focus detection. The signal from the area image sensor 32 is sent to a band-pass filter 35 through a buffer amplifier 34 and the best frequency component for focusing is extracted here. Consequently, the pattern recognition is performed speedily with the relatively simple constitution. |
