<p>An improved absorbent padding for containment of fluids such as body fluids, comprising a nonwoven isotropic array of support fibers and of nonthermoplastic superabsorbent fibers, formed into a highly absorbent batt. In a preferred embodiment, a fluid-permeable top sheet is applied to one face of the absorbent batt, and a fluid impervious back sheet is applied to the opposite face. The product is formed by air laying a web which is a random mixture of the two types of fibers, and then needle punching the web (preferably after the top sheet is applied, and through the top sheet) to lock together the fibers and trap the superabsorbent fibers. The fluid-permeable top sheet may be of a material presenting a relatively low friction surface.</p> |
