[Also in Division B8] A machine which makes and fills tetrahedral packages with, e.g., milk, comprises a vertical welding jaw 3 which effects longitudinal sealing of a folded and slightly flattened plastics or plastics-metallic paper sandwich sheet 6, when around a package filling tube 8, so forming a sheath 7 which is fed between upper and lower horizontal welding and cutting jaws 10, 12 by a vertically displaceable horizontal clamping jaw 4. The upper jaw 10 is displaced 45 degrees from the longitudinal seam and the lower jaw 12 is at right-angles to the upper jaw. The filling tube 8 is connected to a constant level reservoir 9 via a syphon 13. The horizontal clamping jaw 4 is mounted on coaxial jacks 15, 16, Fig. 6, so that activation of the jack 15 causes the jaw 4 to move the sheath 7 a distance equal to twice the distance separating the welding and cutting jaws 10, 12, whereupon the lower jaw closes just before the upper jaw 10, whilst activation of the jack 16 between the successive jaw closures effects a slight downward displacement of the sheath to compensate for sheath deformation during welding. An optional additional horizontal clamping jaw (14), Fig. 2 (not shown), can be used beneath the lower jaw 12 to initially hold the bottom seal in position.</p> |
