The steering column of a motor vehicle is provided with an energy absorbing device to protect the driver in the event of a collision. The steering column (4) is mounted inside a tube (2) which has its upper end attached to the vehicle instrument panel, whilst its lower end is mounted in a bearing (11) fixed to the bulkhead (10). In the event of a crash, the steering wheel is pressed against the tube (2). A split cone (17) fixed to the tube (2) is driven into the bore (14') of a fixed sleeve (14) so that a high radial pressure is created between the cone (17) and sleeve (14) with a consequent high frictional force which absorbs the energy of impact.
