Several commutator motor designs are proposed which are capable of providing smooth and rapid short-circuit braking together with good commutation. These designs call firstly for the armature to be connected in the motor operation phase between the field winding and the commutating-pole winding, while in the braking phase there is a conduction path between the armature and the commutating-pole winding to restrict the braking current, this path being controlled by two Zener diodes connected in parallel in inverse directions. Secondly, the stator is constructed and connected so that, in the braking phase, commutating-pole fields are switched out of some of the field poles, the commutation field being superimposed on the exciter field in such a way that the field is weakened.
