The invention relates to a connecting rod which is designed as a composite hollow body consisting of a plurality of components. An outer layer of material is subject to a tensile prestress owing to internal supporting means that accept pressure in the radial direction, the said tensile stress prevailing essentially over the entire axial length of the connecting rod and in each case being uniform around the circumference. The supporting means are formed by a plurality of annular or sleeve-shaped bodies (22, 23, 24) resting against the outer layer (21) over parts of their circumference, in conjunction with shaped bodies (25, 26, 27, 28) situated between them and the annular or sleeve-shaped bodies (22, 23, 24) are composed of a material which has a lower yield point than the outer layer (1, 11, 21, 35) and which is expanded plastically in situ. <IMAGE>
