[Also in Division Gl] The presence or absence of a running yarn at each spindle station of one or more spinning and/or twisting machines is detected and measured according to temperature of, or temperature differential between, machine elements whereat in normal operation heat is generated by frictional engagement by, or is caused by movement of, the yarn. Signals derived from such detection may register, record and display the "ends-down" condition of the machines and also provide warning if this is excessive. Heat sensitive detector apparatus may be carried by patrolling machinetending equipment e.g. an overhead, pneumatic cleaner, so as continuously to scan the machines. In the machine 10 shown, wherein heat is generated by movement of a traveller 12 about a ring 11 at each spindle, the fall in temperature due to cessation of the traveller movement resulting from interruption of spinning yarn S is detected by an infrared radiation sensing device 30 comprising a housing 31 defining a parabolic reflector surface therewithin, an infrared filter 32 and a sensor 34 at a focal point of the reflector and electrically connected to electronic circuits (not shown) for recording &c fluctuations in radiation. The device 30 has a zone of sensitivity confined to the ring 12 or a part thereof. The electronic circuits may be responsive to either an amplitude or a frequency modulated signal and the signal transmission may be effected by radio frequency techniques. |
