The pallet has a trough stand (10) with an upwardly projecting protective shield (16) to protect the objects (64) from damage. A lid (22) is connected hinge-like to the top end of the shield and when closed combines with the shield to make up a substantially square hood covering the trough. The opening motion of the lid can be assisted by at least one gas spring (26). The shield is a self-supporting sheet metal structure with side walls (18) angled from the main part thereof.
