Heating by gas ionization

The generation of high temperature by the process of ionizing rarefied gas by means of electromagnetic power is economical in time and power. The system can provide high temperature limited only by the melting point of the vessel 2 eg silica or quartz which contains the gas. High temperature is available after a warming up period of about 30 seconds. Heat insulation or refractory materials are not normally necessary. A normally available resonant cavity such as a domestic type microwave oven of sufficient power may be employed and remains usable for its normal function if a closed vessel (6, Fig. 2) is used.
