A machine for automatically tying knots in a strand of material, particularly for tying a knot in the end of a sausage casing. The machine (Fig. 1b) comprises a gripper 11 which pulls out a strand 9 from a shirred collagen casing 10 and at the same time twists it. A ring 16 carries wrap-around rollers 17 which wrap the strand 9 around a pair of jaws 15. A tail gripper and cutter 19 grips the tail of the twisted strand and cuts off any unwanted portion. Tail gripper 19 then inserts the end of the strand through the loop of the strand and it is pulled right through to tighten the knot by jaws 15 which close on to the strand. |
