A process for preserving woody cellulosic materials comprises applying to the material an organic solvent solution of a chlorinated phenol having one or more hydroxy groups bound to a benzene ring and 1-5 chlorine atoms bound to the same benzene ring which is optionally substituted by one or more hydrocarbon groups of a salt of such a phenol soluble in the solvent, and a salt of chromic acid with an organic base which contains at least one straight or branched chain containing at least 6 carbon atoms, which salt is sufficiently soluble in the solvent to provide a solution containing at least 0.2% w/v CrO 3 (equivalent) at 20‹C. Suitably the organic bases are primary, secondary and tertiary amines, quaternary ammonium bases, substituted guanidines, biguanides and s-triazines possessing at least one branched chain in the molecule. Preferred salts are formed from the secondary or tertiary alkyl primary amines (C 6-22 ) or guanidine derivatives thereof. Exemplified are 2 - ethyl - n - hexylamine, di(2 - ethyl - n - hexyl) amine, tri (3,5,5 - trimethyl - n - hexyl) amine, mixtures of tertiary alkyl primary amines (C 12-14 ) and (C 18-22 ) and their 1,5-dialkyl biguanide and N,N'N"-trialk and a mixture of secondary alkyl primary amines derived from n-undecane. The salts have the general formulµ B 2 H 2 CrO 4 or B 2 H 2 Cr 2 O 7 , where B represents one molecule of a monoacidic base. The invention provides that the chromium salts may be employed singly or in admixture one with another. The chlorinated phenols employed are preferably tri-, tetra- or pentachlorophenols but tri and tetrachloro cresols, chlorinated bis phenol A, the trichloro xylenols, tetrachloro o-phenyl phenol and chlorinated hexyl phenols may be used. Other preservatives agents may also be used in the composition, e.g. copper naphthenates, solubilised copper 8-quinolinate, triorganotin compounds such as tributyltin oxide and its derivatives, and solvent soluble salts of arsenic acid with suitable organic bases, e.g. the mixtures of tertiary alkyl primary amines containing either C 12-14 or C 18-22 . The cellulosic material may be treated by applying the composition by brushes or rollers or by dipping. Alternatively the material may be impregnated by exposing the material to be treated to a solution of the treating material under pressure. Suitable solvents include aromatic hydrocarbons, petroleum hydrocarbon solvents, or mixtures of petroleum hydrocarbon solvents with aromatic hydrocarbons and/or ketones. The composition may also include insecticidal agents such as lindane and anti-blooming agents such as dibutyl phthalate. The invention finds particular application when the cellulosic material is wood, plywood, chipboard or hardboard. |
